THE FALL OF JERUSALEM
Foundational Truth : God is good
Lesson Focus : God’s people rejected Him and lost God’s blessing.
In God’s kindness the consequence for their sin turned some back to God
This term at Church, Sunday School is learning about God’s people the Israelites in the Old Testament. The Old Testament tells us about God and His people before Jesus came to save sinners. God’s people in the Old Testament were waiting for Jesus to come and save sinners. Last week we learnt about King Josiah finding the book of the Law and leading the Israelites to know and obey God. But today we are going to learn about what happened years after King Josiah died. After King Josiah died God’s people the Israelites - On the count of three, say, “Israelites!” 1-2-3 Israelites! – forgot about God’s Word. Because God’s people forgot about Him and disobeyed God’s Word, God sent the Israelites into exile. God sent the Israelites away from their home into the land of their enemies the Babylonians to be prisoners there.
(Hold up your bible) The bible is God’s true Word. The bible is from God and about God. Let’s read about how God sent the Israelites away from their home into captivity in Babylon.
READ : 2 CHRONICLES 36:18
“He (King Nebuchadnezzar) carried to Babylon all the articles from the temple of God, both large and small, and the treasures of the Lord’s temple and the treasures of the king and his officials.”
God’s people forgot about Him. They chose to disobey God, to not love and know the One True God. How do you think the Israelites would have felt going into exile? They would have felt really sad and scared. It would have been hard to trust that God was in control and that God was good. But we know that God is good and God is in control of everything. God is good so He would not let His people keep on disobeying Him and forgetting that they had a sin-sick heart in need of saving. God’s people rejected Him and lost God’s blessing. In God’s kindness the consequence for their sin turned some back to God. God is good so He used the Babylonian exile to bring His people back to Him so that He might save them.
On the count of three whisper “God is good”: 1-2-3 God is good!
Now, on the count of three say in a normal voice “God is good”: 1-2-3 God is good!
Now, on the count of three shout “God is good”: 1-2-3 God is good!
