ELIJAH TAKEN UP TO HEAVEN
Foundational Truth : God is in charge of everything
Lesson Focus : God’s plan will not be stopped
This term at Church, Sunday School is learning about God’s people the Israelites in the Old Testament. The Old Testament tells us about God and His people before Jesus came to save sinners. God’s people in the Old Testament were waiting for Jesus to come and save sinners. Last week we learnt about God sending down fire to show everyone that he is the one true God. Today we are learning about how God took Elijah the prophet up into heaven. On the count of three, say, “Elijah!” 1-2-3 Elijah! A prophet is a messenger of God, someone who speaks for God. God chose to take Elijah up into heaven and another prophet called Elisha - On the count of three, say, “Elisha!” 1-2-3 Elisha! – carried on God’s work.
As Elijah and Elisha were walking towards Jericho, they came to the Jordan river. Elijah rolled up his cloak and struck the water with it. Mimic striking the water. And the water divided into two! Elijah and Elisha walked on dry ground through the river, and they continued on towards Jericho. As they continued to walk, God took Elijah up into heaven in a chariot of fire!
(Hold up your bible) The bible is God’s true Word. The bible is from God and about God.
Let’s read about how God took Elijah up into heaven.
READ : 2 Kings 2:11
“As they (Elisha and Elijah) were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind”.
Wow! Can you imagine that! God took Elijah up into heaven in a flaming chariot of fire! How do you think Elisha would have felt watching his friend and teacher Elijah be taken away into heaven? Do you think it would have been pretty scary even though it would have been amazing to look at? Elisha had been following Elijah and learning from him for many years. And now Elijah was gone! But even though Elijah was gone and that was scary, God showed Elisha that He is in charge of everything. Elisha asked, “where is the God of Elijah now?”. And God answered him. Elisha picked up Elijah’s coat, and struck the water it, and the water divided into two – just like it did for Elijah. Even though Elijah was gone, God is in charge of everything, His plan cannot be stopped. Elisha would continue speaking God’s message. God is in charge of everything!
On the count of three whisper “God is in charge of everything”: 1-2-3 God is in charge of everything!
Now, on the count of three say in a normal voice “God is in charge of everything”: God is in charge of everything!
Now, on the count of three shout “God is in charge of everything”: God is in charge of everything!
